The new Italian production of L’Elisir d’amore with the Rome Festival Orchestra is expected to be refined in its casting. The American soprano Mrs. Curtin, just back from a German tour, offers a supple though light voice. Baritone Andrea De Bonis, with his more dramatic, solidly “old school” timbre, takes on Sergeant Belcore. Tenor Maurizio Coppi, active in southern Italy and debuting here in Korea, proves well-suited to Nemorino’s register, with smooth legato and nuanced phrasing.

Gaetano Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore (1832) is a comic opera in two acts. It tells the story of Nemorino, a naïve young villager who wins the heart of Adina not through a magical “elixir,” but with sincerity, patience, and the power of true love, blending humor with tender lyricism.
