Interview with Andrea De Bonis – The First Opera Baritone to Perform in Miri
+: Mr. De Bonis, how long have you been in Sarawak, and what defines your career?
I’ve been in Sarawak for nearly six years, though I travel often. I am a winner of three international music competitions and have taught music across Italy, China, Brazil, and Malaysia. I also spent sixteen years studying opera with renowned teachers like Luisa Malagrida and Silvano Verlinghieri.
+: What moments stand out most in your career?
Being praised by China’s legendary conductor Zheng Xiaoying, who called my voice “an example of dynamic and emotional singing,” was unforgettable. I’ve performed in Italy, China... and each stage has shaped me as an artist.
+: What are your hopes for music in Malaysia?
I hope classical music will be valued as a cultural treasure, with academies and training for young musicians. I’m happy to sing here in Sarawak, and on Sept 5th, I’ll perform romantic songs at Miri’s City Cultural Hall.
